The Start of Jazz

Home Info Sources

At the start of the 1920s, Jazz emerged as a popular genre of music directed by African Americans. Even so, the first Jazz music came to the attention of white audiences rather than the latter. W.C. Handy became the "Father of the Blues" after using black techniques to sing, bringing attention to the new genre.

Jazz grew in Popularity but it also grew the amount of racial conflicts in the U.S. For example, " Marian Anderson was invited to sing by Howard University, but the venue they wished to book, Constitution Hall, was owned by the Daughters of the Revolution, who refused to allow her to perform because of her skin color." (n.d. "Jazz and Blues | Smithsonian Institution.")
